If you have been a faithful reader of my blog in recent months, you will be aware that I have been down on social media lately. I come by my negativity honestly, I think. There are many ways that social media is being used today that are having large and impactful effects on our society. That is too bad because, as a concept, social media can be a wonderful vehicle for sharing the very best of ourselves with others. In the past year alone, I have seen photos of people getting married, having children, dropping children off at university for the first time, starting new jobs, winning championships, traveling to interesting and exotic places, attending cool concerts, going to proms, graduating from school, getting a new hairdo or manicure and so much more. What I have seen most of all are people surrounded by love. It is uplifting to know that there are so many good people in the world and that those people are loved so fully and completely by other good people. If showcasing these cycles of positivity was all that social media was ever used for, that would be enough for me.

“Snowman” by Sia is a song for those people who have found their people. It came from an album called Everyday is Christmas which was released in 2017. “Snowman” is quite simply one of the loveliest songs I have heard in quite some time. It speaks to the wonder of deeply held love for another while acknowledging the fleeting nature of our time spent together with those we care for. There is no twerking or profanity or talk of body parts in motion. “Snowman” is just a song about how it feels to love another unconditionally and the lengths one is willing to go to squeeze every second out of that experience, that relationship, that partnership through life. It is a beautiful song. Period. The emotional impact of viewing each day of your life and your relationships as if it was Christmas Day is to raise your life to a higher plane all the year round. That was the point of the album that Sia released. Everyday is Christmas is not an album filled with Christmas songs per se. Instead, it is an album of songs that connect aspects of how we feel at Christmas time with more universal themes, such as “Snowman”, which is about love before loss.
“Snowman” resonated with listeners and spawned two different viral trends on TikTok. The first was an attempt by ordinary people to sing the lyrics to “Snowman” all the while demonstrating the extraordinary breath control that Sia uses while singing this song. At one point, she sings for almost forty seconds straight before taking a breath. It is funny to see so many people try to do likewise. It isn’t easy, that is for sure. However, because the lyrics are so poignant, it is worth watching some of these clips simply to hear good people spreading words of love to the world. It is very uplifting. The second TikTok viral trend has to do with the video for the song. The video for “Snowman” tells the story of Mr. and Mrs. Snowman who love each other completely and are worried about the warmth of the coming sun. The video shows the efforts they take to stay together and be as one. In the end, to celebrate arriving at a moment of safety, the couple dance together in the snow. The second TikTok trend featured real life couples dancing in the snow in sync with the tune of the song, wholly in love, just like Mr. and Mrs. Snowman. These little videos of couples in love dancing while the snow gently falls are romantic and wonderful to see. These videos show in real time what I have always maintained, and that is there is nothing more important in life than love. If you have found that with someone, then you have found all that you need in this world. The song and these videos are all so simple and innocent, which helps to give them the emotional impact that they possess and that you, as a viewer, will feel. Watching them will make you happy. The world needs more happiness, no?
Admittedly, I am late to the party when it comes to this song. I heard it for the first time just a couple of weeks ago when the girls and I were putting up our Christmas tree and getting our holiday decorations out. Sophie put on a “modern” holiday playlist. This was the second song that played. It blew my mind completely. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since then. Finding this song may turn out to be the best gift I get this Christmas. If so, then I made out like a bandit! Thanks Sophie and Leah for helping me to find new music that is of such excellent quality. If you have never heard “Snowman” before, then Merry Christmas to you as well. The world is filled with good people and with love. Let’s celebrate that today.

Good morning, I’m so glad I watched the video of Sia ‘s Snowman before I read the news. What a lovely start to the day. I usually read the news and political blog first so after this I think I need to change my routine. Thank you MacInnis’s.
You are welcome. I hope to get Keri out in the snow for a twirl before the season is over. Have a great day.❤️👍
Wow!! Thanks ❤️🎄
You are most welcome.😀
Man, I am totally confused here. The lyric version is not where you said it was, but I’m used to that so I found my own lyric version. But it didn’t help much. I never got anything out of this song like i hoped to get from reading your post. Are we talking the same language even?
I wanted this song to be everything you said it was, I was ready to reblog it, but I cannot reblog what I do not understand.
To begin, I believe firmly that people should celebrate Chrsitmas every day of the year… along with every other holiday, internatoonal or national day of whatever, and so on. Every day is an opportunity to be nice to people, to love people, to care for the people they know or meet, etc etc etc. I hate the fact we have special days for everything under the sun, or above it, or in it. Maybe I’m just weird, but to me every day is the greatest day in everyone’s life. We are alive to live it! Nothing is more important than being alive, so why not share that every dauy — every way we know how!
But this song doesn’t say that to me, even though I want it to. What is it I am missing?
The link is fixed. Sorry about that. But as for the rest, I am not sure what to tell you. The song seems self-explanatory to me. The snowman couple are happy together but worried about melting because of the sun. If that happens, how will they still be together and have fun. To me it is pretty straightforward. You enjoy love while you have it and protect it like grim death when the end seems at hand. Like I said in the post….it’s about “love in a time of loss”. I’m sorry that this wasn’t clear to you in the lyrics. In any case, I do agree with you that everyday is a special day. “Special days” such as Valentine’s Day, Christmas and the like prove problematic when societal expectations are that we have to demonstrate love and friendship when we do that everyday anyway when we love each other unconditionally all year round. Sorry that the song wasn’t your cup of tea. No worries. Carry on. Have a great day.
Carrying on. Wanting to hear your version but not hearing it. I’ll reblog it anyway, see how others respond. If they get it, all power to them!
Thanks for the reblog. I hate to break it to you but you are the first person to not get it, like it, understand it….whatever. The response from others has been overwhelmingly positive. No worries though. You are still aces in my book! 🙂
Have great day.
I’m just an ornery old coot.
My pqrtner doesn’t get it either. But my readers do! So thanks for your work.
What a dull world it would be if every single person thought and felt the exact same way…unless of course that way was one of peacefulness, happiness, compassion and so on…in that case, it would be ok. Take care. Thanks for sending some of your folks my way. Nice to meet them all.
I hoped there would be more. Did any “subscribe”?
A handful have “liked” and “commented”, which is fine. I would expect that they would want to take a test drive first. No worries. They have all been very nice so far. Happy to have new folks reading and interacting.
I’ve not heard this song until now that’s because of being a cantankerous old coot who tends to spend time in a remote tower grumbling at the world.
This is a beautiful flowing song, the words run like a stream busying its way through the land. I need to research and listen to Sia.
And a truly heart warming video, somehow the style of the animation just fits the rhythms of the music, equally beautiful.
Thanks for the share and opening my eyes and ears.
You are most welcome. I quite like Sia. Enjoy your journey.
Hi Tom. Rawgod put me onto this song and your post. I’m just about to listen to Snowman for the first time myself. Merry Christmas from Australia. 🙂
I hope that you enjoy it. Sia is a wonderful singer and seems like a terrific person as well. The same applies to rawgod. I am lucky to have found him. Finding love and friendship is Life’s great reward. Take care. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. Merry Christmas from Canada.
i love the song snowman
Me, too. ❤️🙂☃️
